Frequently Asked Questions

Is MDF fire resistant?
Standard MDF is not fire resistant. While it will not ignite as quickly as some natural timbers, it is still a combustible material and should not be used where fire resistance is required. For projects that must meet specific fire safety regulations, fire-retardant MDF (FR MDF) is the appropriate choice, as it has been specially manufactured to slow the spread of flames.
Is MDF waterproof?
No, standard MDF is not waterproof. It can absorb moisture, causing it to swell, weaken and lose its shape if exposed to water for prolonged periods. For areas with higher humidity, such as kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms, moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF) is a better option. Even moisture-resistant MDF should not be used in direct contact with water or outdoors unless it is adequately protected.
How to cut MDF?
MDF can be cut using a circular saw, table saw, jigsaw or handsaw, depending on the type of cut required. For the cleanest finish, use a fine-toothed blade designed for wood or composite materials, support the sheet fully during cutting, and mark your cutting line accurately before you begin. Cutting MDF creates a fine dust, so always wear appropriate eye protection and a dust mask, and use dust extraction where possible. Sand the cut edges lightly if needed to achieve a smooth finish before painting or finishing.
